Breaking Down Shame, Building Up Leaders: Todd Chapfield’s Journey with First Nations Youth

Todd Chapfield, a proud Wiradjuri man living on Wollongong Country in the Yuin Nation, has dedicated his life to empowering the next generation of First Nations youth. Through his program, My Voice, My Journey, Todd creates opportunities for young people to strengthen their identity, connect with culture, and step into leadership. The program takes participants on transformative journeys across the country. They connect with elders, explore different Country, and visit sacred sites, learning about the history and stories of the land directly on Country. For Todd, it’s about breaking down shame and building up confidence. “We focus a lot on identity,” he says. “When young people know who they are and where they come from, they carry themselves differently — with pride.” The results speak for themselves. Many participants have completed Year 12, gained employment, attended university, joined cultural dance groups, and taken leadership roles in community events such as NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week. For Todd, “knowing where you come from” is deeply personal. Growing up surrounded by culture and elders, he learned from his uncles and aunties about his people, his Country, and his identity. This connection grounds him and fuels his passion to give the same opportunity to others. When asked what advice he would give to young people feeling unsure about their future, Todd’s message is simple: “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Take that leap of faith. The best opportunities come when we challenge ourselves to try something new.” Through My Voice, My Journey, Todd continues to inspire young First Nations people to walk proudly in their identity, confident in their culture, and ready to lead.
