Lucas Chatfield — Proud on Yuin Country, Dreaming Big for the Future

On the stunning South Coast of New South Wales, where Yuin Country meets the sea, lives a young boy with a big smile, an even bigger imagination, and a heart full of pride for his culture. His name is Lucas Chatfield. Lucas is in Year 6, and like many kids his age, he loves sport — though he’s quick to let you know soccer isn’t his game. “Yeah, no soccer. Footy, all those games,” he laughs. But beyond sport, what truly matters to Lucas is his connection to family and culture. When asked what makes him proud to be Aboriginal, his answer is simple and powerful: “Just being around all my family.” That strong sense of belonging and togetherness is something he carries with him every day, and it’s reflected in the way he engages with his culture through art. Whether it’s creating Aboriginal artwork or learning from his pop, Lucas is keeping cultural traditions alive in his own way. Lucas’s dreams for the future are clear: “Being a builder, being a builder.” He says it twice, as if to emphasise how certain he is. And when asked about superpowers, his eyes light up — he’d choose to be invisible. His superhero name? “Look at the flash.” Perfect. Living on Yuin Country, Lucas’s story is one of pride, connection, and a vision for the future. It’s a reminder that the voices of young Aboriginal people are full of wisdom, creativity, and hope — and they deserve to be heard. From the playing field to the art table, from dreaming about building to imagining himself as a superhero, Lucas represents the bright, resilient spirit of Aboriginal youth on the South Coast. And just like his superhero alter ego, we’re sure he’ll make an impact in ways that might surprise everyone.
